Pandisco sa ilaw

By Jao Mapa

In this piece, I wanted to translate the traditional grace of the Pandanggo sa Ilaw into an abstract, modern visual language. The flowing forms and movement reflect the rhythm and elegance of the dance, while also exploring the evolving identity of Filipino culture. For me, Pandisco sa Ilaw is a bridge between generations — a way to honor our heritage and show that it continues to inspire and resonate in the contemporary art world.

About the Artist:

Jose Vicente Mapa III, or Jao Mapa, is a Figurative Expressionist known for depicting simple life and rich Filipino culture. His common subjects include taho vendors, jeepneys, tricycles, mother and child, harvest, and fishermen. He has a knack for interpreting these subjects in a comic way. His primary strength lies in his use of bright colored paintings, which are intended to evoke feelings of ease and happiness in the viewer or to help them recall a relatable past memory.
